Andy Warhol: The Complete Commissioned Record Covers Details
Review “Produced at nearly actual size, with photographs of the original works, along with entries detailing the story of each album, this catalogue is a compendium of sumptuous delight.”―Crave Online“Warhol is among the greatest album-cover designers of all time, with a few classics that every record collector has to have. The Rolling Stones’ “Sticky Fingers” with a giant close-up of a jeans-clad crotch, working zipper and underwear underneath was pure Warhol―proactive yet populist, and hard to ignore. His peelable banana on the cover of “The Velvet Underground & Nico” (1967) with the suggestive pink banana underneath and giant signature below it is without parallel. Many, many more album covers have been virtually forgotten, but all show the care and craft Warhol brought to even the most routine commercial work.” —The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review Read more

This is a really vital addition to the published work of Warhol. It is surprising that the compiler had to search high and low to find most of the entries in this catalog. Apparently Warhol did not keep a set of these published album covers for his own archives, which is very surprising considering what a pack-rat he was. My only complaint about this publication is that is is too large (about the actual size of the LP's themselves) and the commentary too detailed. I suppose as a scholarly work it is important to include as much as possible, but for the more casual reader such exactness can be overwhelming. All that being said, it is a very important work for anyone who loves Warhol's work. I do, and I am certainly glad to have it.
